Fish Pond Stocking Calculator

Calculate now

Quick answer

Stocking starts from the final biomass, not the fish count. Multiply pond acres by the target yield (SRAC 280 cites about 2.2 tons/acre at 4,000 fish/acre with feed, up to 4.4 tons/acre at 8,000/acre with emergency aeration), divide by the harvest weight of each fish, then add the expected mortality. All-male tilapia survival is 90% or greater.

Enter pond acreage, a production target, harvest weight and expected mortality. The tool returns how many fingerlings to buy and the aeration that target calls for.

Enter the pond area to see the stocking plan.

How the math works

  1. Final biomass = pond acres × target (lb/acre).
  2. Fish at harvest = final biomass ÷ harvest weight per fish.
  3. Fingerlings to buy = fish at harvest ÷ (1 − mortality).

Reference targets for tilapia ponds

System Stocking Yield
Fed, no supplemental aeration about 4,000/acre approaching 2.2 tons/acre
Fed, nighttime emergency aeration 8,000/acre as high as 4.4 tons/acre
Continuous aeration (2–4 × 1-hp paddlewheels per 1.2–2.5-acre pond) 12,000–20,000/acre 6 to 10 tons/acre

Figures from SRAC Publication 280, Pond Culture of Tilapia, Southern Regional Aquaculture Center. Optimum growth is at 82 to 86 °F; growth slows a lot below 68 °F, so plan the season around water temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stock more fish to grow more pounds?

Only up to your oxygen supply. SRAC 280 notes that 8,000 fish/acre needs nighttime emergency aeration, and 12,000 to 20,000/acre needs two to four 1-hp paddlewheel aerators running continuously.

Why buy more fingerlings than fish I plan to harvest?

Some die during the cycle. The calculator divides the harvest count by expected survival. SRAC 280 puts all-male tilapia survival at 90% or greater, so the default mortality is 10%.

Does it work for small backyard ponds?

Yes. Enter a fraction of an acre: 1 acre is 43,560 sq ft, so a 4,356 sq ft pond is 0.1 acre. The yield targets are per acre and scale with area.

What harvest weight should I use?

Marketable tilapia in SRAC 280 weigh 1 lb (454 g) or more, so the calculator starts at 1 lb. Change it to match the size your buyers want.
