Dog ideal weight calculator by body condition score

Quick answer

A dog's ideal weight comes from its body, not a breed chart. On the 9-point body condition score from WSAVA, 4 and 5 are ideal, 6 and 7 are over ideal and 8 and 9 are obese. The Merck Veterinary Manual defines overweight as 10% to 20% above ideal body weight and obesity as more than 20% above. From current weight and score you can estimate a range for ideal weight, not an exact number.

Feel the ribs, look at your dog from above and from the side, pick the matching score and enter today's weight in pounds.

Enter the current weight to see the estimate.

The body condition score in 30 seconds

The WSAVA Body Condition Score chart uses 9 points: 1 to 3 under ideal, 4 and 5 ideal, 6 to 9 over ideal. Score by touch and shape: ribs, waist from above, belly tuck from the side.

How the range is estimated

The Merck Veterinary Manual puts overweight at 10% to 20% above ideal and obesity above 20%. For a score of 6 or 7, the tool divides current weight by 1.20 and by 1.10. Example: a 53 lb dog at score 7 has an estimated ideal of about 44 to 48 lb. For scores 8 and 9 it only gives a ceiling (current weight ÷ 1.20).

Limits

Adult dogs only. Puppies, pregnant dogs and dogs with fluid in the abdomen, masses or muscle loss can be misjudged. Once you have the target, the dog food calculator shows the calories, but a weight-loss plan should come from your veterinarian.

Frequently asked questions

Why not use a breed weight chart?

Frames vary a lot within a breed. Two healthy adult Labradors can differ by well over 15 lb. Breed charts describe the population, not your dog.

How do I know I picked the right score?

Use the three WSAVA signs: ribs felt under a thin fat layer, a waist behind the ribs from above, and a belly that tucks up from the side. If you have to press to find the ribs, the score is 7 or higher.

Why a range instead of one number?

Because the source gives a range. Overweight means 10% to 20% above ideal, so any single number would pretend a visual estimate is a measurement.

My dog scores 8 or 9. What first?

Book a vet visit before changing food. Above 20% over ideal, the target weight needs a clinical exam, and the pace of weight loss must be controlled.
