Zebu cattle breeds: Nelore, Gir, Guzerat and Sindhi compared

Quick answer

Zebu cattle (Bos indicus) are breeds originating in India and adapted to heat, such as Nelore, Gir, Guzerat (Guzerá) and Sindhi (Sindi). In Brazil, zebu animals, pure or crossbred, make up more than 80% of the national herd. Registry data from the Brazilian Zebu Breeders' Association show their different aptitudes: Nelore is the beef breed, with over 11 million animals registered by 2020; Gir is the dairy zebu, averaging 3,745.50 kg of milk per lactation; Guzerat is dual-purpose; and Sindhi is a red breed suited to arid climates.

Why zebu cattle matter in the tropics

Zebu breeds are Bos indicus cattle that originated in India. Compared with European taurine breeds, they cope better with heat and external parasites. In Brazil, zebu animals, purebred or crossbred, make up more than 80% of the national herd, according to the Brazilian Zebu Breeders’ Association (ABCZ), which keeps the registries of these breeds.

The main breeds by registry numbers

Breed Aptitude Milk Weaning ♂/♀ Yearling ♂/♀ Registered (Nov 2020)
Nelore Beef — 192 / 171 kg 326 / 277 kg 10,207,742 horned + 826,314 polled
Gir Dairy 3,745.50 kg per lactation (4.43% fat) 149 / 139 kg 272 / 236 kg 807,790
Guzerá (Guzerat) Dual purpose 2,194 kg in dairy lines (4.86% fat) 187 / 175 kg 312 / 270 kg 499,526
Sindi (Sindhi) Dairy, arid climates 1,706.10 kg average 160 / 148 kg 303 / 244 kg 34,448

Look at the order of magnitude of the registrations: the Nelore dwarfs the other breeds.

Nelore, the beef breed

The ABCZ describes the Nelore as a beef breed noted for fertility, adaptability to different production systems, early maturity and weight performance. The coat is predominantly white to grey. It is used as a pure breed or as the base for crossbreeding, and a polled (hornless) variety arose in Brazil.

Gir, the dairy zebu

The Gir is the traditional source of zebu dairy genetics and the base for other breeds, above all the Girolando. Registry data give 3,745.50 kg of milk per lactation with 4.43% fat and 3.34% protein. A polled variety also exists.

Guzerá, dual purpose

The Guzerá is known for its lyre-shaped horns and is used for both milk and beef in mild and hot, dry climates. Its cross with Holstein, the Guzolando, has a strong presence in Brazilian milk production.

Sindi, adapted to arid climates

The Sindi originated in Pakistan. It has a predominantly red coat, is well suited to arid climates and also performs well in milder ones.

A note on “dairy Nelore”

The Nelore is essentially a beef breed. Embrapa records that some producers cross Holstein with Nelore (“Nerolando”), but notes that milk yield in this cross is lower than in other dairy crosses.

How to use these numbers

Registry averages describe breeds, not the animal in front of you. Ask for the individual’s records and its registration, match the breed to your production system and climate, and plan health care with a veterinarian. The wider picture is in cattle breeds for beef and milk.

Frequently asked questions

What is a zebu cow?

Zebu cattle (Bos indicus) are breeds that originated in India, as opposed to taurine (Bos taurus) breeds such as Angus and Holstein developed in Europe. They are valued in hot climates for heat tolerance, resistance to external parasites and hardiness.
